Platforms: About

Powell and Montgomery platforms are illuminated by fluorescent lamping on top of acoustic baffles in ceiling coffers.  It is arguably a visually pleasant solution in that there’s no direct view of the lamping, but it has severe drawbacks.  Dust from the brakes and high voltage skid accumulates on the lamps and reflectance surfaces such that the overall lighting level is considerably lower than IES recommended levels, and depreciates so much that it requires flipping the lamp tubes over halfway through life.
